Space Shuttle Enterprise-Manchester Airport (1983)

Wed 21st April 2010 by tkey 30 Comments

Look what i found.

Space shuttle Enterprise has a ‘piggy back’ on top of a NASA 747 (SCA)
during her European tour on 7th June 1983.

These pictures were taken from the then civil aviation park on the southside
at Manchester Airport. (Runway 2 is there now)
with a vivatar 110 camera.

To clear up some confusion i have been reading.
The aircraft did not land it made one low and slow flypast.

I was in St Anthony’s primary school and the headmaster brought the whole school out to see this once in a lifetime opportunity . It is still a huge topic being debated , because a lot of people who didn’t see it don’t believe it happened .

I saw this too as a child of 8 when visiting my uncle and cousins with my mum and dad and brothers.

The aircraft DID land – my dad was friend’s with Reg, the landlord of the Airport Hotel pub , we were upstairs in their private rooms watching it – I have a photo of it somewhere

I was in Claremont just up the road
Miss speed blew the whistle in the playground and pointed out a dot in the sky

I was at school, Lower Counthill, Oldham, when this flew over in the distance. I think it was over BAe Aerospace in Chadderton and we saw it in the distance. Good to see these pics 🙂

I was 14 at the time and saw it from the Lower School playing fields at Goyt Bank School in Offerton, Stockport as it flew past the very building where we all watched the Columbia launch two years earlier!

I can’t quite recall if it was our morning break or lunchtime, but I clearly remember the 747 banking left revealing the Shuttle in clear view on it’s back. It may have gone from view in just a few seconds, but it was an amazing, once in a lifetime sight that I’ll never forget.

I remember being at school, in the line to go back in after lunch, as it flew over. One grumpy teacher told us off for looking up! My school was in Werneth, Oldham.

I lived in Heald Green at the time and was 4 years old. I remember this vividly.

I asked my mum why there were two planes stuck together. She came to the door, after telling me to stop talking rubbish and then saw it herself!
